B.J. Penn beats Joe Stevenson for the UFC Lightweight Championship: UFC 80 Results
By Robert Rousseau

January 19, 2008: There were several things to like about UFC 80: Rapid Fire coming in. First, the fact that this MMA event came to us all live on January 19, 2007 from the Metro Radio Arena Newcastle in Newcastle, England allowed it to air at 3 P.M. Eastern in the United States. Thus, we didn't all have to stay up the entire night to see it. Further, it was a night with big time bouts on the card like B.J. Penn vs. Joe Stevenson and Fabricio Werdum vs. Gabriel Gonzaga.

In other words, it was a night that would no doubt have stoppages. So here's the review Submit To MMA style.

Break out fight of the night

Paul Kelly vs. Paul Taylor : These two fighters went at it in a big way. In other words, this fight started off like another version of Stephan Bonnar vs. Forrest Griffin I with people throwing punches with bad intentions all over the place. Eventually in each round, though, Kelly was able to bring the fight to the ground. From there, he grounded and pounded his way to a decisive victory in an entertaining fight. Said another way, every time these two stood up, even if the instances were short lived, there was a chance that the fight would end.

Most knew who Paul Taylor was because of the valiant way he performed in a recent loss to Marcus Davis (who was also on this card). But until this fight, Americans really didn't know much about undefeated Paul Taylor, who trains with Michael Bisping in the Wolfslair. Here's what we know now.

Taylor is one tough hombre with excellent takedown and ground control skills. Looking forward to seeing him fight again.

By the way, if we had picked a fight of the night this would've taken it. But we didn't.

Statement fight of the night

Fabricio Werdum vs. Gabriel Gonzaga : Werdum had won their earlier Jungle Fighting match up. However, this was a different Gabriel Gonzaga with more power and stand up acumen. Which is why he was the decided favorite coming in.

What many of us forgot, however, was that Werdum was also better than he had been earlier in his career. And even though Gonzaga landed some devastating low kicks early in this fight-the kind that actually dropped Fabricio- Werdum was able to weather the storm and even took the top position on the ground by the end of the initial stanza.

The real story on this fight happened in the second round, however. Despite the fact that commentator Mike Goldberg said what many were thinking when he indicated that it was "bad news for Werdum," that the second round would start on their feet, Werdum started coming through like he had in their first fight with strong knees in the clinch and solid punches. Eventually, he ended up on top of his adversary with his back due to his strong stand up. Several unanswered strikes later, the referee pulled Werdum off.

With the win, Werdum let the rest of the world know that he was in the heavyweight picture.

Werdum via TKO at 4:34 of round two.

Punch of the night (this was a tie)

Wilson Gouveia vs. Jason Lambert (tie): Lambert was obviously winning this one, taking his opponent down at will and pounding away for the majority of the time that the fight went on. But here's the thing about Wilson Gouveia : He's a survivor. And fortunately for him, he survived for long enough to land a huge left hook that dropped his adversary in a big way.

Gouveia wins via KO at 37 seconds of round two

Jess Liaudin vs. Marcus Davis (tie): Before this fight, Liaudin doubted Davis's identity by saying the following: "We all know he's not Irish. His mom is Welsh, his dad is Scottish, and he's born in America so other people will buy the whole fake Irish thing but the real UK fan know that he's not." Further, Liaudin indicated a plan to stand and bang with Davis, at least initially.

Bad mistake in strategy. Yes, Liaudin hit home with a few nice low kicks to start things off. But then Davis unloaded a devastating left hand that landed behind Liaudin's ear and dropped him.

Marcus Davis wins via KO at 1:04 of round one. He is a fighter that's on a roll.

The Main Event

B.J. Penn vs. Joe Stevenson for the UFC Lightweight Championship : Before the fight, B.J. Penn said, "I only want to be known as the best ever. . . Is that too much to ask?"

Not the way he's been fighting, it isn't.

B.J. Penn started things off with some solid stand up and a takedown. He then proceeded to deliver strong ground and pound despite Stevenson's game attempts to get up underneath him. But at the end of the round, Penn opened up a HUGE gash on Stevenson's forehead that spurted blood like a sink. Though Stevenson got through the round and fought gamely in the second, eventually he got tagged with another barrage of punches from Penn and ended up getting mounted.

From there it was only a matter of time before Penn took his back and sunk in the choke.

B.J. Penn via rear naked choke at 4:02 of round two.

Afterwards, Sean Sherk came into the Octagon. That fight is one to look forward to.

THE REST

Sam Stout over Per Eklund via unanimous decision

Alessio Sakara over James Lee via TKO at 1:30 of round one

Antoni Hardonk over Colin Robinson via TKO at 17 seconds of round one

Jorge Rivera over Kendall Grove via TKO at 1:20 of round one
