April 4, 2008:
The last time the IFL aired, Ryan McGivern upset Matt Horwich for the IFL Middleweight Championship in Las Vegas. This time the IFL aired live from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Would either Wagnney Fabiano, Jay Hieron, or Vladimir Matyushenko lose their belt, just as Matt Horwich had last time?
Controversial decision of the night : Chris Horodecki vs. Nate Lamotte
Coming off of his first career loss, Chris Horodecki was looking for a big knockout to set the record straight. Most thought that Nate Lamotte was perfect opponent for him to do just that.
Unfortunately for Chris Horodecki, Nate Lamotte wasn’t a proponent of this ideology.
The first two rounds were very close with Lamotte gaining points for takedowns and some fast paced ground and pound. Horodecki, on the other hand, gained points for well placed leg and body kicks and timely punching.
So close were these rounds, in fact, that they were difficult to score.
The final stanza saw Horodecki winning for the majority with strong striking. However, Lamotte took his opponent down at the tail end of the round and connected with some serious ground and pound before the bell, making every round difficult for the judge’s to score.
In the end, you could’ve given this one to either fighter. However, the judges only gave it to one, amidst a small following of boos.
Chris Horodecki wins via unanimous decision.
Impossible to choke match : Jim Miller vs. Bart Palaszewski
Before the fight, Miller said, “I bring a really fast pace to my fights.” Well, his words proved accurate.
In the first round, Miller nearly pulled off an Anaconda Choke after taking Bart Palaszewski down rather quickly. In fact, the move was clearly sunk in. But somehow Palaszewski simply didn’t tap. Further, he escaped the move and managed to slam his opponent into the canvas soon after.
In the final round, Jim Miller was able to take Palaszewski’s back and sunk in the rear naked choke. We’re talking about a sunk in, legitimate move here. But once again Bart Palaszewski decided that he simply would not tap, nor go to sleep. Eventually, this allowed him to escape to his feet.
In the end, this fight clearly went to Jim Miller, who’s a fighter to watch in the future. That said, you’ve got to give Palaszewski points for heart. It’s hard to even fathom how he managed to avoid a submission loss during this encounter.
Jim Miller wins via unanimous decision.
Flash knockout of the night : Delson Heleno vs. Brad Blackburn
The first two rounds saw Delson Heleno take his opponent down and execute strong ground and pound. Thus, there was no reason to believe that the third round wouldn’t be more of the same.
Wrong again.
As Heleno went for a takedown as he had so many times in this bout, Blackburn sprawled out. A moment later, the underdog threw a hard right. And that was all she wrote.
Brad Blackburn wins via KO at 1:50 of round three.
IFL Light Heavyweight Championship : Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Jamal Patterson
Before this bout, Patterson said, “I think there was a time that he ( Matyushenko ) dominated… that time may be in the past, and this is my time now.”
The first round was all about the surprising Jamal Patterson. Namely, he hit home with a very hard left hand that dizzied Matysushenko right off the bat. In addition, at one point Patterson almost caught his adversary in a guillotine choke and pounded away at him on his feet for the majority of the stanza.
But the second round was very different. Matyushenko took Patterson down quickly and started an onslaught of ground and pound that didn’t really end until the referee pulled him off. In the end, Patterson’s face was bruised and battered. A good initial round for him, but Matyushenko is a beast.
Vladimir Matyushenko wins via TKO at 3:35 of round two.
IFL Featherweight Championship : Wagnney Fabiano vs. Shad Lierley
“I go out there to win no matter what,” said Shad Lierley coming into this fight. Of course he does. But Wagnney Fabiano no doubt had other plans. So who would achieve the dream?
After only 37 seconds in the opening round, that question was answered.
Simply put, after softening up his opponent with a nice low kick, IFL Featherweight Champion Wagnney Fabiano threw a right hand. That’s when Shad Lierley fell the canvas unconscious.
Wagnney Fabiano is clearly a fighter to watch.
Wagnney Fabiano takes home the win with by KO after only 37 seconds in the opening round.
IFL Welterweight Championship : Mark Miller vs. Jay Hieron
“I think I fight better when the pressure’s on me,” said Jay Hieron coming in. And after the fight, I’d have to say that he must.
This was a dominant performance by Hieron, as he near immediately took his opponent down and started a ground and pound onslaught that forced the referee to step in. In the end, there was no other way for the referee to go.
Jay Hieron wins via TKO at 2:10 of round one.
