May 16, 2008: IFL Connecticut came to us all live on May 16, 2008 from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. In sum, it was slated to be a night about two champions with the same first name- Ryan McGivern (middleweight) and Ryan Schultz (lightweight)-as well as this guy that goes by the name of Roy "Big Country" Nelson. But would their opponents spoil the night?

Read on to find out.

Fast Knockout of the Night : Josh Souder vs. Zac George

"He likes to come forward and everybody backs out. But my game's inside, so it's gonna be like two trucks meeting," said Souder coming into this bout.

Well, they certainly came at one another hard. But after landing inside with a knee and body blow, Souder was the one that looked like the truck. Along with this, a hard right to his opponent's eye coupled with a flurry later in the round left George sitting in the corner absorbing punishment.

All told, the fight was over in 47 seconds.

Josh Souder wins via TKO at the 47 second mark of round one.

Submission of the Night : Danillo Villefort vs. Mike Massenzio

After a very brief amount of time on their feet, Mike Massenzio, a man on a nine fight win streak, took Villefort down. From there, Villefort started in with the rubber guard, and Massenzio began pounding away. As the action continued, Massenzio moved to an unorthodox top position (slightly facing away from Villefort).

Bad move. Villefort grabbed his leg, and the two started jockeying for position with Villefort looking for the kneebar and Massenzio looking to defend. But Villefort is one slick dude. Thus, he eventually came through.

Danillo Villefort wins via kneebar at 3:25 of round one.

The IFL Middleweight Championship : Ryan McGivern vs. Dan Miller

Ryan McGivern had just taken the IFL Middleweight Championship from Matt Horwich. How would he respond in his first title defense?

It was not his best night.

Basically, McGivern came out swinging after getting nailed with a punch early on. Along with this, he connected with some nice shots before Miller put him on his back. For a while, McGivern seemed to be doing a good job of defending. But this would not last, as Miller used his patented jiu jitsu skills to sink in the kneebar. Soon after, McGivern was tapping.

Dan Miller takes home victory by kneebar at 3:36 of round one.

The IFL Lightweight Championship : Deividas Taurosevicius vs. Ryan Shultz

Before this fight, Ryan Schultz predicted, "two guys going after it real hard and really trying to hurt each other." After seeing the fight, well, he was right.

The first round was very close, with neither fighter landing a lot on their feet, but what they did land was hard. This one may have gone to Schultz based on more effective punching.

The second stanza started off with Deividas Taurosevicius connecting with some very hard punches in a flurry of activity. This later prompted Schultz to take his adversary down. However, Schultz was then forced to move his way through an armbar attempt before executing some nice ground and pound to end the stanza. A good round that in this writer's opinion, Taurosevicius took.

The next stanza started off with a seriously hard takedown by Schultz. Soon after, Taurosevicius turned him over and secured the side control position. After a little pounding away of his own, Taurosevicius took Schultz's back momentarily before getting turned over. And that's where the round ended.

Could Taurosevicius have won that stanza as well?

The fourth saw the two trade takedowns, with Taurosevicius's coming first. Though Schultz spent more time on top pounding away in ground and pound fashion, Taurosevicius nearly armbarred him from that position. The move was very close to working, in fact, before the IFL Lightweight Champion picked his opponent up and slammed his way out. Still, it wasn't until the end of the stanza that Schultz did a near jump into full mount and took his opponent's back. It was an awesome move and the stanza ended with Schultz nearly securing the rear naked choke on Taurosevicius. This likely netted the stanza for Schultz.

What a great fight!

The fifth round, perhaps the deciding one, saw Ryan Schultz executing some rather devastating ground and pound on his opponent for the majority of the stanza. There was no doubt who won the final round, but who took the fight?

Ryan Schultz wins via unanimous decision.

The IFL Heavyweight Championship : Roy Nelson vs. Brad Imes

"I just wanna go out there and win," said Nelson coming into this fight. Well, he sure did that.

Nelson came out and nailed Imes with a hard overhand right that stunned him early in the initial round. From there he connected with numerous hard strikes before a right later in the round dropped Imes (who showed a lot of toughness despite the loss).

Roy Nelson wins via TKO at 2:55 of round one.

The Rest

John Franchi def. Frank Latina via submission (rear naked choke), 2:19, R1

Aaron Stark def. Lamont Lister via decision (unanimous), R3

John Howard def. Nick Calandrino via TKO (strikes), 2:24, R3

Matt Horwich def. Joey Guel via decision (unanimous), R3
