EliteXC - Strikeforce Review and Results : Cung Le TKO's Frank Shamrock
By Robert Rousseau

On March 29, 2008 EliteXC and Strikeforce got together to bring MMA fans a show with a headliner that literally made you stop to take a look. We’re talking about Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le. So how would an MMA legend like Shamrock do against a fighter that has never lost during his professional career?

That’s what Submit To MMA aims to tell you in our own unique style.

The Main Event : Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le

The first round was about Shamrock stalking Le and hitting home every now and then, especially at the end of the stanza. However, for the majority of the stanza Le connected with the harder shots, particularly kicks to the head and body. Shamrock almost got a full fledged takedown, but still give the round to Le.

The second round also went to Le, this time more forcefully. Le landed several hard side kicks to his opponent’s midsection and a right hand that caused Shamrock to sway.

What a third round! Cung Le won the majority of the stanza with much of the same as the first two rounds: Great kicks and opportune punches, including a great trip. However, Shamrock hurt Le with a powerful punch and from there nailed the San Shou kickboxer with several powerful strikes in a flurry. Still, Le showed that he had the heart of a champion by absorbing the onslaught that Shamrock dealt and coming back. Namely, he rocked the champion with two high kicks as the round came to a close.

Who won this round? It was hard to say until Shamrock fell to the canvas in his corner afterwards. He was both hurt and tired.

And in between rounds the fight was called. Shamrock’s right arm was apparently injured. Broken, in fact, according to him from blocking strikes all night.

Cung Le wins via TKO after three rounds. All you can say about him now is wow!

Knockout of the night: Joey Villasenor vs. Ryan Jensen

Earlier in the round while the two were swinging for the fences, Villasenor connected with a left hand that dropped his opponent momentarily to the canvas. But Ryan Jensen was game and fought back hard.

But the next time Jensen hit the canvas—after a heavy right hand, this time—there was no coming back because he was completely out cold.

A huge right hand from Joey Villasenor, and a great knockout.

Joey Villasenor wins via KO at 4:45 of round one.

Submission of the night #1 : Drew Fickett vs. Jae Suk Lim

Before this fight, Lim said, “I’m gonna finish this fight quickly.” Unfortunately for him, he was both right and wrong here.

On one hand, the fight did finish quickly. On the other, it wasn’t he who finished it.

After turning Lim over on the ground, Fickett’s opponent tried to get up. During this attempt, Lim found himself in a guillotine choke. Slamming Fickett into the canvas did nothing but make the move stronger.

Drew Fickett wins via guillotine at 1:14 of round one.

Submission of the night #2 : Wayne Cole vs. Mike Kyle

Mike Kyle came into this fight after an extended period of time away from the game due to suspension for his actions in a fight. That said, before the bout he said: “Now I’m way better of a fighter than I ever was.”

Perhaps Kyle underestimated the ring rust because Cole came in, took him down, mounted him, and then went straight to the armbar.

It was all over in only 42 seconds. Wayne Cole wins via armbar; nothing beautiful, just effective.

Dominant performance of the night : Gilbert Melendez vs. Gabe Lemley

Melendez nailed Lemley with a nice shot and then took him down. From there, a ground and pound onslaught ensued for the rest of that round and part of the second. It’s not that Lemley isn’t a good fighter—he actually showed some decent technical striking and an active guard.

But Gilbert Melendez is just a tough guy to hang in there with no matter how good you are.

Gilbert Melendez wins via TKO at 2:18 of round two.

In the end, this Strikeforce- EliteXC collaboration was a success because of the main event. Beforehand, Frank Shamrock said of his opponent, “I don’t think he’s got a chin.” Guess is, he would say something different about Le right now.

This was a fun night of fights.
