UFC 82 Review and Results : The Spider spins his web over Hollywood
By Robert Rousseau

UFC 82 took place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on March 1, 2008. We could tell you who else was on the card, but the main event was so good that’s where we’ll start.

How about Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva?

So, let’s get this review going Submit To MMA style.

The Main Event : Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson : Before this fight, Anderson Silva had the following to say. “When I beat Dan Henderson, I’m going to have the opportunity to be able to unify the belts. I’m going to train super hard for this fight and give it my all and my goal is to bring this belt back to Brazil with me.”

If you just watched the first round in this one and walked away you would’ve probably had two thoughts in mind. First, Anderson Silva’s stand up, particularly those laser- precise kicks of his, look dangerous. Second, Dan Henderson is probably going to win the fight.

But that’s why there is more than one round to a fight.

During the second stanza, Silva began to pick apart his adversary. In fact, Henderson looked disoriented, something that he really never has looked like before. Along with this, Silva actually ended up on top of the former Olympic wrestler on the ground because of this twice. The second time, by the way, was after Silva nailed him with a truly dynamite knee to the face.

And moments later, like Travis Lutter before him, Henderson’s pain turned into a submission loss (though this time Silva took his opponent’s back and sunk in a rear naked choke, not a triangle).

Same result, however.

Anderson Silva wins via rear naked choke at 4:52 of round two.

Closest Fight of the Night : Heath Herring vs. Cheick Kongo : Kongo won the first round, displaying excellent takedown skills that most didn’t even know he had. However, after losing much of the second round as well, Heath Herring managed to turn his opponent over on the ground and proceeded to nail him with consecutive, hard knees to the ribs. The final round was rather similar to the first: Kongo won the beginning portions by maintaining the top position on the canvas, but Herring turned him over and started in with knees and punches to the ribs later. At the tail end of the stanza, he also managed to gain full mount.

In the end, Herring did a little more damage.

Heath Herring wins via split decision.

Movielink, LLC One Round Brawl of the Night : Chris Leben vs. Alessio Sakara : Before the bout, Chris “The Crippler” Leben said, “I see blood flying everywhere.” Well, for as long as the fight lasted—less than a round, mind you—Leben and his opponent fought like they both had seen this in a premonition.

Sakara seemed to hit home with the cleaner shots during this fight. But Leben kept coming forward as is customary for him (he has a great jaw). And finally, late in the round, he nailed Sakara with two consecutive ridiculous lefts that floored his opponent. Several consecutive and unanswered shots later it was all over.

Chris Leben wins via TKO at 3:16 of round one.
