UFC 84 Review and Results : B.J. Penn defeats Sean Sherk
By Robert Rousseau

On May 23, 2008 UFC 84: ill will came to us all live from the MGM Grand Arena in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event was a huge match up with a lot of bad blood between B.J. Penn and Sean Sherk. A stripped UFC Lightweight Champion vs. the current UFC Lightweight Champion. And that wasn't even the half of it.

So let's do this review Submit To MMA style.

Antonio Mendes vs. Thiago Silva : Staying undefeated

Antonio Mendes came out and nailed Silva with a head kick that floored him. Amazingly, Silva actually blocked the kick, but the power was still felt. Silva got up quickly from the strike but took some abuse in the clinch from his adversary via knees before being floored again, this time by a hard low kick.

However, the good times would not continue for Mendes as after allowing his opponent up, he would be taken down by Silva. Then he would be mounted. And then the ground and pound assault would ensue before Mendes finally tapped.

Thiago Silva wins via submission (due to strikes) at 2:24 of round one.

Goran Reljic vs. Wilson Gouveia : A Croatian coming out party

This was an excellent fight. Goran Reljic hit home with some very nice high kicks for the majority of the initial stanza. However, toward the end of the first round Gouveia hurt him with a flurry of punches; but Reljic survived.

The second round saw Reljic persevere through a hard left that dropped him and some serious ground and pound that followed it to get to his feet. From there, Reljic hit home with a hard left of his own and ground and pound to follow. The difference was, Gouveia did not survive.

Goran Reljic wins via TKO at 3:15 of round two in an awesome fight.

Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine : Knockout time

"I'm going for knockout, to beat him so fast," said Wanderlei Silva before taking on former TUF star Keith Jardine. However, Jardine had other ideas: "There's no reason why I shouldn't win this fight," he said.

Let's put it this way; someone would be proven wrong, someone would be proven right.

A strong flurry by Wanderlei Silva that started with a hard right floored Jardine early on. From there, the ground and pound that The Axe Murderer dished out was relentless.

Wanderlei Silva is back, folks.

Wanderlei Silva wins by knockout after 36 seconds in round one.

Christian Wellisch vs. Shane Carwin : Lightning fast knockout of the night

Bottom line on this one is that Carwin landed a right, and that ended the fight.

Shane Carwin wins via TKO after 44 seconds.

Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz : The final UFC fight for Tito Ortiz?

"The challenge has been set. I'm taking this fight serious, more serious than any fight I've ever took," said Ortiz before taking on Lyoto Machida. But would that be enough?

Most of the first round in this fight was rather unexciting. Machida landed some kicks and avoided a few Ortiz takedowns. However, near the end of the stanza Machida threw Ortiz to the ground-that's right, Machida threw Ortiz to the ground-and from there connected with some very significant ground and pound.

The bell saved Ortiz from dealing with more from that position (Machida had side control).

The second round saw Machida continue to move around the ring and pepper his opponent. Ortiz complained about his opponent's stick and move style during and after the round, but it was a stanza that he clearly lost.

The third stanza was a great one. Tito Ortiz came out aggressively, which is hard to pull off against an elusive guy like Lyoto Machida. Along with this, he did some solid work to the body inside on Machida.

But then Ortiz got nailed with a knee to the body that buckled him. From there, Ortiz managed to gain guard despite some significant ground and pound by his adversary. And then something even more surprising happened.

Ortiz caught his opponent in a triangle. It was tight. Soon after, Ortiz transitioned to an armbar. Somehow, however, Machida escaped the move.

In the end, the submission attempt had been Tito's only chance for victory.

Lyoto Machida wins via unanimous decision.

B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk for the UFC Lightweight Championship

"Yeah, I'm pissed," Sean Sherk said before his main event bout against B.J. Penn regarding all of the things that were being said about him by his adversary. "I still think that belts belongs to me."

"They don't like each other and they both want to kick each other's ass," UFC President Dana White chimed in about the two of them. But the bottom line is that all of the stuff that went on before the fight was just talk. Here's what happened when it all went down.

The first round saw Sherk go for a fast takedown unsuccessfully. From there, a stand up battle ensued that would take both through the first two rounds. Penn opened up two cuts under Sherk's eyes in the first round, a stanza that he clearly took. The second round, however, was pretty close as Sherk landed significantly more blows than he had the previous round.

The third round saw Sherk continue to choose to stand with Penn, which couldn't have been more surprising. Interestingly, the commentators noted that Sherk wasn't using his right hand much; perhaps it was injured, though this was not confirmed by Sherk right after the bout. Regardless, toward the end of the round Penn landed a hard knee and some terrific ground and pound. Though Sherk made it to the bell, he was unable to continue.

B.J. Penn wins via TKO after round three.
