Knockout of the night
Drew McFedries vs. Patrick Cote
“Patrick Cote, knocked out,” said Drew McFedries before taking on his Canadian opponent.
Unfortunately for McFedries, that didn’t come to fruition. Though the two through some heavy hands for the time they were in the Octagon, that time was cut short when Cote landed a hard right. From there, the Canadian followed things up with several more in succession standing over his opponent and the referee had no choice but to step in.
Patrick Cote wins via TKO at 1:44 of round one. Talk about a man on a roll.
Submission of the night
Nate Diaz vs. Alvin Robinson: Bottom line on this match was simple. For the brief time period it went on, there was some back and forth action on the ground. But Robinson made a mistake while on top, and Diaz immediately capitalized by slapping a picture perfect triangle choke on his opponent.
When it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Nate and his brother Nick are truly outstanding.
Nate Diaz wins via triangle choke at 3:39 of round one.
Toughing it out moment of the night
Kurt Pellegrino vs. Alberto Crane
Fight starts off on their feet where Joe Rogan aptly pointed out that Kurt Pellegrino had the advantage in this one. Unfortunately, things didn’t start out that way for him. Said another way, Alberto Crane nailed Pellegrino with a hard kick to the face that sent him to the canvas and caused his bottom teeth to go right through his bottom lip.
Ouch!
The crazy part, however, was that Pellegrino survived Crane’s submission attempts on the ground afterwards, recovered quickly, and in the second round was able to turn things around enough to score a TKO victory of his own.
Now that’s tough.
The Main Event
Mike Swick vs. Josh Burkman
Before the fight, Burkman wondered aloud about Swick’s toughness, asking the question, “is his chin as good as mine? That’s what we’re gonna see.”
The first round went to Burkman in a big way. Along with this, he clearly proved to be the stronger fighter and was more aggressive scoring takedowns and even on his feet landing shots. The second round, however, was somewhat uneventful. That said, the only thing that really happened of note was that Swick showed off some stellar takedown defense and landed a nice head kick. The final round was close as well, and Swick did a good job of moving around, even if it left the fans with a bad taste in their mouths (there was some booing).
In the end, Swick won over the judges. Not the best main event we’ve ever seen, but a win is a win.
