This past Saturday, everyone sat eagerly by their television sets hoping to see a “dogfight” between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit in the UFC 143 main event. What they ended up seeing, however, was anything but. Rather, they watched Condit utilize a stick and move mentality, even if it was mostly with kicks, to stay out of the way of Diaz’s constant boxing style attacks. It was smart, probably the only game plan that Condit could employ that would allow him a chance to win. And win he did, by unanimous decision.
Of course, there have been plenty of people willing to argue that Diaz won. After all, Condit moved a lot, and wasn’t all that exciting as a result. Diaz clearly brought the fight to him. But in the end, you can’t argue the decision.
Yep, it was close enough where either fighter could’ve won. Still, as UFC President Dana White has said on multiple occasions, you don’t want to leave it in the hands of the judges. That shouldn’t be new learning.
The first two rounds were too close to call. The third and fourth stanzas clearly went to Condit. The fifth was surely Diaz’s. In other words, it was a close fight. And when it’s that close, you really aren’t afforded the luxury of arguing a decision.
Here’s looking forward to Condit’s fight with Georges St. Pierre. Have a feeling that he and Diaz will eventually see one another again anyway.
