After losing his UFC lightweight belt to Ben Henderson by decision, Frank Edgar looked pretty beat up. But it’s not how you look; it’s how you fight. And the reality is that despite what some people are saying out there, his bout against Henderson was very, very close. Rounds 1, 3, and 5 could’ve gone either way. Sure it was a learning experience for him, as this time he met up with a competitor perhaps just as game as he was. But the bottom line is that if Edgar asks for a rematch after giving the same to both BJ Penn and Gray Maynard, he deserves one. And that’s exactly what he requested recently on The MMA Hour.

“I’m saying it, and I’m saying it loud: I want my rematch,” he said. “I’m not going to have these antics or play these games. I’m telling you want I want. This is what I want. I think it’s fair. I think the fans want to see it. It was fight of the night. Listen, even if these guys want to see me get beat up, I do get beat up in a lot of my fights, even in the fights I win, so it’s win-win for everybody.”

// ]]>

The bottom line is that Edgar has given the same to others. He fought a great fight against Henderson and simply came up short. You’ve got to give him the benefit of the doubt. Nothing against Anthony Pettis, whom I believe to be perhaps as good as either of the fighters in question. But a champ like Edgar, after a close loss, deserves another shot right now.

The UFC should give it to him.

MMA is a tough sport to figure. With so many ways to win- knockout, wrestling and control, submissions, etc.- gambling on it can be a pretty unpredictable activity. But here’s something that’s hard to understand. Namely, Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist Ronda Rousey is favored in 4-1 fashion over current Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate.

Wow, really?

Can Rousey win? Yep. Her judo skills, strength, outstanding athleticism, and overall submission game probably give her a chance in any fight. Thus, the 4-0 record may be a little misleading. What is not misleading, however, is Tate’s championship belt and 12-2 record. She has a strong wrestling background. She’s a very solid striker. What’s more, she’s never been defeated by submission, Rousey’s specialty.

// ]]>

Am I saying that Tate will definitely win? Nope. But what I am saying is that Rousey being a 4-1 favorite over a woman who’s won six straight, including a victory over Marloes Coenen, is absurd. Can’t wait for the fight, but people are highly underestimating Tate, I think. She’s no doubt hoping to educate them on Saturday night.

What they ended up seeing, however, was anything but. Rather, they watched Condit utilize a stick and move mentality, even if it was mostly with kicks, to stay out of the way of Diaz’s constant boxing style attacks. It was smart, probably the only game plan that Condit could employ that would allow him a chance to win. And win he did, by unanimous decision.

// ]]>

Of course, there have been plenty of people willing to argue that Diaz won. After all, Condit moved a lot, and wasn’t all that exciting as a result. Diaz clearly brought the fight to him. But in the end, you can’t argue the decision.

Yep, it was close enough where either fighter could’ve won. Still, as UFC President Dana White has said on multiple occasions, you don’t want to leave it in the hands of the judges. That shouldn’t be new learning.

The first two rounds were too close to call. The third and fourth stanzas clearly went to Condit. The fifth was surely Diaz’s. In other words, it was a close fight. And when it’s that close, you really aren’t afforded the luxury of arguing a decision.

Here’s looking forward to Condit’s fight with Georges St. Pierre. Have a feeling that he and Diaz will eventually see one another again anyway.

I don’t know about you, but I am getting tired of MMA fighters who are having a tough time saying they are going to run off and become a boxer, as if it’s a much easier gig. Previously, it was Nick Diaz telling everyone he isn’t getting paid enough so he might go and box so that he can earn boxing money. Now it’s Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson saying he wants to box so his opponents will have to stand and punch with him, rather than run.

Rampage Jackson is referring to the fight he just lost at UFC 135 against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Jones showed incredible poise in using his reach advantage and kicking to keep Jackson from getting inside. When Jackson finally made it close enough to hit Jones, he simply utilized his footwork to move away. You could tell it was extremely frustrating for Jackson during the fight and is still eating him up a week afterwards.

One thing that Jackson needs to keep in mind is that he will not be able to continue on with his UFC contract and box at the same time. The UFC simply won’t allow any of their fighters running between boxing and MMA fights, for fear of harming their own reputation and/or the UFC’s.
